Unapologetic
Unapologetic is a calendar for 2018. A feminist one. It also functions as a set of 13, A3 size posters. As an object, it’s inspired by See Red Women’s Workshop, an artist collective founded in 1974, dedicated to changing the image of women in the media and advertising and to create silkscreen posters for the Women’s Lib. Upon seeing their impressive collection, a spark ignited. We took these same tools to raise our voice on gender equality.
In her Tedx Talk and book We should all be feminists, the Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie tells us the story of a woman. A woman whose perspective, cultural background and social position are very different from ours and, still, whose struggle we recognize. We recognize the expectations and frustrations and that's where we find a common ground as women — independent of class, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Our own definition of contemporary feminism couldn't be more accurate thanks to Chimamanda's arguments, so we reached out to her and asked to make her words our own.
The calendar was supported by a website, store and also a campaign on Instagram. This campaign was meant to engage people and differentiate the project from others that we felt where very unilateral in approaching this theme. The first edition sold out.
On the Unapologetic’s launch, we did a workshop with our community. It took place at FOCO, an art gallery in the center of Lisbon (where I also did an exhibition). The Unapologetic Workshop was a presentation of our project and, simultaneously, a reflection about the practice of communication.
